Last week, Attorney General Jerry Brown released what he characterized an "encouraging 2009 annual report showing that hate crimes in California fell by more than 20% last year”, but warned that “ we are still a long way from ending bigotry and prejudice.” According to the Attorney General, the decline in hate crimes reflects an overall drop on all types of crime in California. At about the same time, the Anti-Defamation League reported a sharp increase in hate crime incidents in California last year. The six recipients, their parents and friends joined the Angels Board and Performing Arts staff for dessert and coffee for this intimate ceremony. Angels Board members presented background on each of the award-winners and the students received the generous check during this exchange.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA - Matthew Van McDaniel pleaded guilty today to recklessly driving under the influence of alcohol into a correctional facility and assaulting a facility officer. McDaniel, 25, pleaded guilty to one felony count of aggravated assault on an officer, one felony count of an ex-convict entering grounds of a correctional facility, one misdemeanor count of reckless driving, one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol, one misdemeanor count of driving with a blood level of .08 percent or more, and a sentencing enhancement for great bodily injury was found true. McDaniel's 2003 prior strike conviction for assault with a deadly weapon was also admitted. He was sentenced to nine years in state prison.

Hello All: I had a good laugh reading the CZ’s newsletter related to building a Dog Park in Coto so “dogs could run free”. We don’t even have a multi-generational park in Coto so Seniors (soon to be me) can walk free. What I want to know is when did dogs start paying CZ dues? Certainly the dogs that reside in CZ must pay dues to warrant the dedication of a park to them. What other logic could there be for building a Dog Park on one of the few areas of common area left in Coto that should instead be dedicated to a multi-generational park. And, why do we need a Dog Park anyway, when we have miles of horse trails that can be used to walk dogs on very long leashes so that they can run and crap free.

Dear Virginia, in response to your letter to the Globe editor of October 15 here are a couple thoughts. Your question was “When does the Board plan to disclose its efforts to break up the Professional Community Management (PCM) Management Team?” If you think seriously that Third board of directors president Carol Moore will answer any question you have openly you are just kidding yourself. Personally, I don’t think they plan to “break up the management team”. Rather I think that the action they have planned will take care of the “team” and the chips will fall as they may. I personally have been advocating since March the full and complete disassociation with PCM in any form but that’s asking for the board to grow a pair and actually take charge. I’ve also been calling for the dissolution of GRF as our trustee since they seem to be bleeding us dry of every nickel. Decent and qualified trustees are a dime a dozen and we could hire one who would cost us less in the long run than GRF has any day.

Buena Park, CA- An unidentified pedestrian female approximately 45 to 60 years old was struck by an auto on Western Avenue, north of Melrose Street in Buena Park, California on 09/18/2009 at approximately 6:00 am. The victim was then taken to UC Irvine Medical Center where she later died. The unidentified person is described as being 5’4 1/2”, 150 pounds with black, with some gray, shoulder length hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a black shirt with a pink leaf design, olive green shirt, red pants, and brown sandals and had a blue backpack with her along with some keys and a garage door remote.

SANTA ANA, CA - James Detory Shipp, Santa Ana, pleaded guilty today to murdering a woman who was attempting stop him from kidnapping her friend and will be sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. The defendant was also convicted of committing a series of rapes both before and after committing the murder. Unusual in many respects: The Resident’s Voice has been holding its meetings on Thursdays for years.
