Orange
County DUI Mobilization - The OC's Law Enforcement
Jobs Initiative
Posted
by CotoBlogzz 08-18-2010 Rancho Santa Margarita, CA - The Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD's) unveiled today what it refers to as the Labor Day Holiday DUI Mobilization Schedule. We prefer to call it the OC's Law Enforcement Jobs Initiative. The following is the schedule of operations, dates, and locations.
In addition, the cities of Brea, Newport Beach,
Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, Lake Forest, Laguna
Niguel, Los Alamitos and Tustin will be conducting
extra DUI Saturation Patrols in their respective
cities during the enforcement period. Additional information about the Avoid Program
and operational plans from around the region can be
found at www.californiaavoid.org.
With
the announcement, the OCSD is inviting reporters are invited to ride along with law
enforcement and or join Task Force &
checkpoint operations in their respective region
throughout the Campaign Funding for this t “Avoid” program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Now, for our skepticism about these types of programs: While the Avoid the 38 and other similar Task Forces serve a useful purpose, the buck stops at city hall: Whether that city is considered the safest city or not, is mostly a function of the leadership displayed by city hall - such leadership includes vision and a willingness to engage with residents, supporters and critics alike. The OCSD is a service provider, which merely implements the statement of work defined by city hall. Typical politician's and union’s simplistic approach to public safety by merely throwing more bodies to the problem, instead of applying common sense solutions, is simply not sustainable Take for instance the leadership demonstrated by the cities of Lake Forest and Mission Viejo: Lake Forest's ordinance issuing a 45-day moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries in the city or the Mission Viejo City Council pioneering work with underage drinking, being the county's first to pass the Social Host ordinance. Certainly these two cases illustrate a more cost-efficient and proactive approach to public safety than say the AVOID program final 2009 Holiday results which required three law enforcement agents for every arrest. If you are not convinced, just look to Rancho Santa Margarita (RSM), where certain politicians are crying foul for a proposed reduction in law enforcement bodies. At the same time, however, RSM residents are complaining that law enforcement officials are merely playing the role of glorified meter maids, issuing license citations in the residents' own front yard. Yet, the sheriff's union, refuses to allow management to collect information to hold the official accountable!
In our assessment, this Avoid 38 Task Force is no different than the $26 billion Teachers' Job Bill the President characterized as "for special interests, ONLY, if you think it is!
