Gaucho Guitars at Saddleback

Mission Viejo , CA – The Gaucho Guitars at Saddleback College is pleased to present Duo Solaris on Friday, April 30th at 7:30 pm in Fine Arts 101. Duo Solaris will join the Saddleback College student guitar ensemble, Gaucho Guitars, in a program of American contemporary and folk music of the United Kingdom . Tickets are $5 at the door.

The newly formed Duo Solaris is impressing audiences throughout Southern California with its vibrant interpretations, eclectic programming, and powerful sound. This seamless ensemble brings existing repertoire, new transcriptions, and contemporary works to the stage. The Los Angeles based pair has premiered pieces by composers Paul Humphreys and A.J. McCaffrey and seeks to continually expand the canon of music for guitar duo.

Guitarists Scott Wolf and Connie Sheu are currently doctoral students at the University of Southern California , where they study with Grammy-winning guitarists Scott Tennant and William Kanengiser of the renowned Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Collectively, they hold degrees from The Juilliard School, New England Conservatory of Music, University of California at San Diego , and Columbia University . Both are prize winners of numerous competitions, including the Boston GuitarFest, American String Teacher’s Association, and Donald Miller Concerto Competition. They each released their debut solo albums in 2008 and have performed recitals in Italy , Spain , Moldova , Hungary , and throughout the United States . Their commitment to the art of guitar is evidenced in their active careers as teachers, arrangers, and advocates of the instrument. Scott is on the faculty of Orange Coast College , Palomar College , Whittier College , and is also a skilled flamenco guitarist. Connie teaches at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, Culver City Adult School , and serves as the Director of Development and Membership for the Guitar Foundation of America.

The Music Department at Saddleback College is a place where students of all ages and abilities, instructors who love teaching and performing, guest artists from around the world, and community audiences come together to develop their understanding of music and of themselves as creative beings. Student performance groups include Concert Choir, Women’s Camerata, Community Chorale, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Combos, Jazz Lab Ensembles, Big Band, Piano Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble.

Saddleback College is located at 28000 Marguerite Pkwy in Mission Viejo , just east of Interstate 5 at the Avery Parkway exit. Parking is available in Lot 12. Take Avery Parkway to Marguerite Parkway turn left to the third traffic light, which is Saddleback’s Marguerite entrance. Turn right into the campus and take the second left to “ Theatre Circle ,” turning right into Lot 12.

The Bard's Multi-phonic Production of TempestMission Viejo, CA – The Department of Theatre Arts at Saddleback College will be presenting what we like to call, a multi-phonic production of the Bards' Tempest - the Tempest by William Shakespeare,  on February 26th through March 7th in the McKinney Theatre. Directed by Patrick J. Fennell, this bilingual production, with a blend of Castilian and Caló, is a story of magical revenge taking place during the mid-19th century with the action occurring on the Island of Catalina . The story of a sorcerer, Prospero, and his daughter, Miranda, who are banned to an enchanted island, will feature songs and dances to Mexican music as well as a Dia de los Muertos  (literaly Day of the Dead) feast as part of the storyline.

Milne & Delbecq in Piano Duo at Saddleback 

Mission Viejo, CA - Saddleback College Jazz Studies is scheduled to present Canadian Andy Milne and Frenchman Benoît Delbecq to perform a piano duo in the McKinney Theatre on February 24th at 7 pm. 

Canadian pianist and composer Andy Milne is considered one of the most distinctive voices at the heart of New York 's creative jazz scene, performing throughout the world in a range of settings, including collaborations with: Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Carlos Ward, Carla Cook, Sekou Sundiata, Avery Brooks, Ralph Alessi, Cassandra Wilson, and Sonny Greenwich. Saddleback Art Gallery Presents Free International Teapot Competition 

Mission Viejo, CA – The Saddleback College Art Gallery announced it is sponsoring the Fourth International Small Teapot Competition from February 11 through March 11, 2010. Over 300 teapots were entered into the competition representing 10 countries including China , Mexico , Israel , Canada , Australia , and the United States . On display are 95 selected works from the competition. One pot will be selected as the “Best of Show” and its creator will receive the grand prize of a tour of ceramics sites in China
