Angels for the Arts Reception at Saddleback College Posted by CotoBlogzz 05-21-2010 09:00 PM
Mission Viejo , CA – Students in the Arts at Saddleback College were treated to a cozy setting on the McKinney Theatre stage to receive their $1,000 scholarships from the Angels for the Arts on Tuesday night, April 11th. The six recipients, their parents and friends joined the Angels Board and Performing Arts staff for dessert and coffee for this intimate ceremony. Angels Board members presented background on each of the award-winners and the students received the generous check during this exchange.
Joshua Christian Guliuzza, Speech student from San Juan Capistrano , received his award from Angels Board member Cee Cee Wakefield, who read her touching introduction, stating that she’s a writer not a speaker. Joshua then gave a short and poignant speech on his gratitude to the Angels for the scholarship. As a junior in high school Joshua found out he had a malignant brain tumor. Following a long stretch of radiation and chemotherapy, the experience changed him for the better and warranted a new respect for his life. He is now motivated to become a nurse in hopes of working and caring for children facing this disease. Before his illness, his goal was to play sports in college, but the speech team has been his saving grace. He would argue that anyone who thinks that forensics is not a sport, statistics show that public speaking is the number one fear in the United States . Joshua plans to use the money towards his goal of becoming a registered nurse while furthering his skills in the area of public speaking.
Lindsay Buchman, Visual Arts student from Mission Viejo , received her award from Angels Board member Kimberly Muresan, who received the scholarship last year as an Art student. This year Kimberly is a student member of the Board of Directors and she is proud to present such an honor to a fellow student. Lindsay has won numerous awards for her printmaking and 3D design works and she is using her scholarship money to help her pursue a Barchelor of Fine Arts degree at California State Long Beach and eventually a Master of Fine Arts with the goal of being a teacher. She says she can’t imagine any career more satisfying than sharing her passion for art with others. She is currently involved in art education with two separate non-profit organizations. Laguna Outreach for Community Arts provides her with annual teaching opportunities at the Youth Shelter and the Boys and Girls Club.
Josefine Damgaard, Theatre Arts student from Laguna Hills , received her award from Angels Board member Ken Realista. Ken gave a dynamic introduction of Josephine, the actor, from a stage-tech perspective. Josefine came to Saddleback with the thought of theatre as a painting; beautiful and vivid, but two-dimensional. Since then her perception has changed. Saddleback has allowed her to not only see the finer details in the painting but to turn it into a three-dimensional image. She realized that theatre is a live painting, a technical machine run by people. She says, “It is its own animal, completely beautiful and spell binding; the magic is not taken away when you know the technical aspects, but added because you see the creative spirit of the human being at full throttle.” Josefine is among five siblings, who are all artists in their own right, and some of them are pursuing careers in various aspects of the arts including culinary arts and music. She is using the money to help her parents with college expenses.
Joelle Teeter, Music student from Rancho Santa Margarita, received her scholarship check from Angels Board member Dr. Michael Valentine, who came to Saddleback after retirement to pursue an interest in music classes. He says that hearing Joelle’s opera performances gives him goosebumps. .Joelle is in her second year at Saddleback College and she says that because of the music faculty and her peers, she has come to love choir, appreciate music theory, study piano, cultivate her own gifts and understand the importance of music in a whole new way. She has been involved in Choir and Applied Voice for four semesters, taken group piano lessons, studied Theory, Musicianship, Music Appreciation, Advanced Voice and managed to maintain a 4.0 in the process. The scholarship will help her pursue higher success in her craft at the University of Missouri-Kansas City where she will be transferring in the fall.
Kathryn Totheroh, Dance student, received her award from Angels Board member Marji Himes, who is her dance teacher. Marji gave an emotional introduction by telling the story of the cathartic process endured by both teacher and student when Kathryn portrayed her dance teacher in a biographical dance piece. According to Kathryn, “Instead of being a flat dancer with a fake smile, I have learned to embrace any emotion intended in each dance and express it, no matter if it true to what I am feeling at the moment. I guess that means I’ve learned to act through my growth in dance.” Kathryn has danced at Saddleback College for the past three years – initially as a ballet dancer and now as a very well-rounded technical dancer. She excels in ballet, jazz, tap and has been crowned the “ghetto-rina” since she performed hip hop in the last dance concert. She is planning to use the scholarship money to send herself to the Boston Conservatory summer ballet program.
Mark Kolodjski, Cinema/TV/Radio student, from San Juan Capistrano , received his award from Angels Board member Joey Sellers, who is also Director of Jazz Studies at Saddleback College . Joey was pleased to introduce Mark, who is a student in a department that has just become a part of the Fine Arts Division. Mark is a little different than the other students receiving scholarships this year in that he already attended college in Minnesota a few years ago and has held full-time positions in computer graphics and photography. He decided to go back to school to expand his knowledge and possibly his business. This semester, he wrote and will direct the cycle 9 project Accused, which is an ambitious short film with a budget of around $1500. He has been trying to raise money in numerous ways including offering inexpensive headshots to Saddleback acting students. Winning this scholarship will go a long way in securing the success of his film. Angels for the Arts is a fundraising and support organization for the Performing and Visual Arts at Saddleback College . Angel members donate their time and talent to raise funds and assist with a variety of arts events on the campus. The group is lead by a volunteer advisory board of directors. Angel members believe in the importance of offering a full spectrum of arts to the community, with the college as the focal point. These events bring together Orange County residents from all walks of life, for the purpose of enlightenment, entertainment, and inspiration. Angels for the Arts provide support for:
