LETTERSLaguna Woods' Own Death CouncilLaguna Woods, California - May 21, 2010 | 10:00 AM Open letter to Jerry Storage, Eugene Hart and the GRF Board. If this doesn’t disturb you then you are living in the
wrong century and the wrong part of the universe.
Pause to consider for a single moment that if this is
happening today to a person living here then it has
happened repeatedly in the past and will happen even
to you . Mr. Storage is the Community's
General manager and Mr. Hart is the head of security.
Both are employed by the community property management
company, PCM. Golden Rain Foundation (GRF) Board
members are voted into office by your housing mutual
boards. You have the power to rectify
this situation. I have a friend who is in the final stages of her life. She
lives alone as do so many of the women who are members
and residents. My friend has terminal cancer and is
under hospice care. She is not the only one who has
nor is she the only one who will. The Hospice
organization caring for her told her they were having
a very difficult time getting through the gate. The
organization requested my friend call the watch
commander to ask him to instruct the “gate
embassadors” to allow Hospice Care personnel who
care for my friend, using my friend’s permission to
enter the gate. My friend did so. Remember this is a
person with terminal cancer and who needs to preserve
every ounce of strength just to live the day. Maybe
you just needed to get validation from a certain noisy
member of this community who has in the past taken it
upon himself to declare another terminal cancer
patient under hospice care “didn’t look sick”
before believing her. That other hospice patient did
indeed succumb shortly after the bold pronouncement by
this know-it-all. The response? My friend was required to supply a list of names of the personnel. This is an almost impossible task for my friend since there is an army of personnel and it is not ever the same person coming in to perform Hospice Care, nor is she the one in charge of personnel of the Hospice organization. This was explained to Mr. Compassion on duty as watch commander who in turn was rude and unwilling to give the instruction that the caretakers were to be allowed through. My friend, understandably upset and stressed, which by the way is really helpful for a terminal cancer patient, thank you very much PCM employee of the year watch commander. Ultimately my friend got in touch with social services
(with a huge payroll, check the Red Book.) Social
services “apologized for the behavior and assured me
there would be no problem.” Tell me, Messrs. Storage
and Hart and any member of the GRF board…if there
was no problem then….. WHY WAS THERE A PROBLEM IN
THE FIRST PLACE? Later somebody from social services
actually visited and gave assurances of “all
possible assistance.” Need I say THIS STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN. But wait. There’s
more. YOU CAN’T GET A HOSPICE WORKER IN THE GATE but
you can come and go through every single gate in this
community by holding up ANY KIND OF CARD in your hand
and just driving through. Now, how would I know this?
Well, I have been doing it on a regular basis for
weeks, one of the cards I used was a coupon for
a free SEEs candy bar, just to see if it could
be done. My little experiment began after an encounter
with one of the nastiest employees of PCM who works in
“community access and passes” in the community
center. I tried to communicate with Mr. Storage at
that time…in fact, as I left the desk of the
officious employee she wished me “good luck with
that” when I explained I was going up to see
Storage. His executive assistant left one message one
afternoon saying Storage was “trying to communicate
with me” and I then called her back as instructed
and left a message saying I was in and out and he
could call at his convenience so we could discuss this
little problem. I’m still waiting. It has been
weeks. Of course he didn’t even have his assistant
call that time until after I had sent him an e-mail
asking if he had received my original message which I
had given to that same assistant IN PERSON while
standing in front of HER DESK in the PCM occupied
offices on the second floor. I guess when the lovely
employee who facetiously bade me good luck knew
whereof she spoke. We recently had a drug arrest near a laundry room (http://www.ocregister.com/news/arrested-248435-clements-drug.html
) and we have every Tom, Dick and Harry wandering
around in here with “Business” passes and no
individual identification AT ALL or even a FORMER
employee of a business because PCM doesn’t control
those passes….but HOSPICE CARE PERSONNEL are
verboten. Is there perhaps a question of some kind of
remuneration from businesses that health care agencies
don’t provide? Is there some kind of animosity
toward particular residents who in actuality
should have the empathy of all. Or is it that there
simply is the inability to feel empathy? What
could be the legitimate reason for such behavior? GRF
Director Ray Gros who is head of the Security
committee is quick to say “we are keeping an eye”
on issues brought to the public eye. Well, Gros, get
your EYE on this! Maybe if GRF spent a little less
time trying to distract the membership with busy work
and brush fires the members could actually SEE what is
being done to them on a daily basis. The day any one
of you demonstrates the courage this person has will
be quite the day. I was appalled to hear a security “officer” greet a
fire/paramedic by name recently and say, “well here
we go again” as a neighbor was taken out of her
manor on a stretcher and to the hospital while her
family stood RIGHT THERE and listened to the complete
lack of caring and discretion demonstrated by one of
your crack staff. And THESE, Messrs. Storage and Hart, less than esteemed
members of GRF, are some of the reasons PCM HAS
GOT TO GO and GRF has to be restructured. The sooner
the better. SHAME on all of you. SHAME on all of the
boards who have allowed this kind of thing to continue
happening because of NO OVERSIGHT. My wish for every
single one of you is that you suffer the same kind of
stress and indifference any hospice patient has had to
endure due to your unwillingness to even consider what
might be right instead of what might serve your
individual egos. It
is more important to you people, it seems, to make
sure that enough traffic tickets are handed out and
enough moving vans are checked than it is to perform
actual security operations for which we pay through
the nose! I’ve had enough PERSONAL experience with
the absence of any real security in this community to
fill a book and I am only ONE person in here. What is
the matter with you people? Do your jobs or get out.
Now pick up the telephone and call ALL of the hospice
patients in here you have made life miserable for for
a single moment and beg for their forgiveness. It
might just serve you well. Editor's note: Name withheld by request for fear of retribution
