Sponsored by The Cabrillo Playhouse and SC Times, future filmmakers will not only learn how to make their own surf film but it won’t just be a surf video to music; they will learn to incorporate a story into their finished product. An impressive line-up of professional filmmakers, writers, and editors in the surf industry are lined up to teach and guide the students/filmmakers in the exciting process of surf filmmaking.

The first workshop was conducted last summer and according to instructor/director Laurel Zwilling, “Last year was an amazing experience for me, the students, and the wonderful filmmakers who contributed their time. We all had a blast going through the process and seeing the final results in the screenings and on Fuel TV.” The workshop consisted of a week-long series of teaching sessions featuring industry experts including how to write and produce a surf film. Three groups of students submitted a final film for review, each of which was screened February 20th at The Cabrillo Playhouse. The winning short film was “Off to Cardiff ,” written, shot and edited by Wiley Archbold, Bleu Archbold and Leilani Harrison. The Archbold’s are related to pro surfer Matt Archbold. The film is a documentary format chronicling the teenagers’ journey to Cardiff for a day of surfing. Wiley and Leilani are 10th graders at San Clemente High School , while Bleu is in 8th grade at Bernice Ayer Middle School .

The Cabrillo Playhouse is an intimate 66-seat theatre that over the years has hosted hundreds of plays – winning rave reviews and capturing hearts with inspiring shows. The playhouse is an historic Ole Hanson-style house located on the corner of Avenida Cabrillo and Ola Vista in downtown Clemente.

The San Clemente Surf Film Festival is dedicated to creating a community of filmmaking designed to educate, network, and find resources for filmmakers to create film and have an outlet to screen work in the city of San Clemente . Through the medium of film, the organization is called to inspire creativity, expression and education to the general public about the surf culture. The goal of the SCSFF is to provide entertainment, education, and an avenue between the art of film, the filmmaker, and audience.
