Marriage, The Hawkeye State Fight Song & HJR-6

The Hawkeye State Supreme Court's unanimous ruling Friday overturning state law protecting marriage has triggered a number of request to modify the Hawkeyes fight songs. One proposed revision reads:

On Iowa proudly at the fore
On Iowa on for evermore
Ev'ry loyal HOH will give
A Rousing toast to you
Ev'ry loyal HOH loves you true
On Iowa with your wealth untold
A heritage to us you did unfold
Love of family, love of friend
Love of country too
Makes us proud for what you stand
Our Dear Old Gold.
Iowa! Iowa!

Where HOH stands for He or She, or HeShe or SheHe

Others however argue that the death of traditional marriage in the Hawkeye state has been highly exaggerated and point to organizations across the country urging all citizens to contact Iowa lawmakers. The Iowa House does have the ability to protect marriage by passing House Joint Resolution 6 (HJR 6), known as the Iowa Marriage Amendment.

HJR 6 is the first step toward giving Hawkeyes the chance to vote to protect marriage, in response to the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling.

In order to debate HJR 6, the House must force it out of committee with a procedural vote. The House Republicans are prepared to initiate this procedural vote, but to pass it they need help.The House Democrats listed below have indicated they support traditional marriage, and are being asked to vote to bring HJR 6 out of committee.
