Pelosi's Shut Up Rule Adopted by Sen. Feinstein

Posted By CotoBlogzz  12-04-2009 | 9:00 PM

Rancho Santa Margarita  - CA - We have previously reported how Speaker Pelosi has tried to amend  S448, the Freedom of Information Act with a Shut Up Rule.  Now Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-California) and Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) are jumping in the Speaker's bandwagon with thier own version of the Shut Up Rule:  An amendment  to S44 that would limit who is protected and  likely exclude from coverage many online journalists, freelancers without contracts, and students or volunteer journalists, among others.

Considering the recent White House war of words with the Fox News Network, incuding the refusal  by the White House to allow The Fox News Network in the news pool to interview Pay Czar Kennet Feinberg and  the threat to Insurance companies and  the US Chamber of Commerce for their opposition to the administration’s policies, the   dubious guidelines released by the Federal Trade Commission aimed at supporting mainstream media while punishing independent bloggers, the importance of the reencarnation of the Speaker's Shut Up Rule takes on an added signficance.

More than ever, what is needed is an independent press and not merely lap dogs.

Real News, Lap Dogs, Watchdogs or Talk Shows? - Rancho Santa Margarita, CA - If you thought that S. 448, the Free Flow of Information Act was important before, it should be even more important now.   What with the White House refusing to allow The Fox News Network in the news pool to interview Pay Czar Kennet Feinberg. "There was an announcement by the Administration that they were putting out the pay Czar Kenneth Feinberg as we showed you earlier, for the White House pool, they sent out a message for the White House pool that Feinberg would be doing a round robin interviews with the 5 network pool that covers the White House ….Fox News has been a member since 1997, when they put out that message they specified that all members of the pool were welcome except Fox”, according to New Fox News' Brett Baier.  To their credit, the 5 networks view the White House’s action as a threat to the First Amendment and collectively protested, prompting the White House to rescind its mandate.

You want a free, independent press? – get off the couch! - The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee delayed the discussion of and vote on bill S. 448 - the Free Flow of Information Act. There is currently no timetable for the next markup of the bill on the Committee's calendar, so the CotoBuzz Journal and readership strongly encourages the Committee to reopen discussions and vote without delay. However, the stall means there is more time to call your senators and let them know how important S. 448 is to maintaining a free and independent press without Speaker Pelosi’s restrictions

Legislative Alert:  Federal Shield Law & Pelosi's Shut Up Rule The CotoBuzz Journal is calling on all who value freedom of speech to  fight against a federal shield law intended  to restrict the free flow of information. Appropriately, on Constitution Day,  Thursday, Sept. 17, the Senate Judiciary Committee will discuss, S. 448 - the Free Flow of Information Act. The bill would create a federal shield law that would grant protections to journalists who refuse to reveal confidential sources, even when compelled by a subpoena and the threat of penal action.  Currently, journalists and their sources are only protected by privilege statutes or administrative rules in certain states. There is no federal shield law protecting journalists and their sources.

Shut Down The Red County Mr. Graves! - Pelosi’s Shut Up Rule

First we hear of local governance enacting  Shut Up Rules, allegedly for efficiency purposes.  Then  OC Supervisor Pat Bates declaring that the CCW issue is dead, followed by Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens statements that she does not agree that her restrictive CCW policies infringe on Second Amendment Rights.   Of course, last week we got treated to a  recently released Orange County Grand Jury report esigned to stifle public discourse anent the CCW and the Second Amendment.
