Plein Talk: A Sea of Light & the Coastal Landscape of the Mediterranean Sea @ Saddleback College
Posted
by: CotoBlogzz | 10/27/2008 07:30 PM Pamme F. Turner, Saddleback College
professor
and mixed media artist, presents an exhibition
of new paintings/drawings, photographs, notebooks and
video clips highlighting a sabbatical journey – a
journey into the “sea of light” and the coastal
landscapes of the Mediterranean Sea . In this
new body of work, Ms. Turner takes the viewer through
the development of the plein air documentation process
and into the revelation/investigation phase of
expanded plein air images--- how this
landscape/seascape/cityscape imagery, once seen and
recorded on site, can develop into an emblematic or
“iconic” vision. En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.
Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th
century working in natural light became particularly
important to the Barbizon school and Impressionism.
The popularity of painting en plein air
increased in the 1870s with the introduction of paints
in tubes (resembling modern toothpaste tubes).
Previously, each painter made their own paints by
grinding and mixing dry pigment powders with linseed
oil. The Newlyn School in England is considered
another major proponent of the technique in the latter
19th century. Pamme F. Turner takes the viewer with her on this journey
through the ever-changing landscapes of Spain , France
, Italy , Greece and Croatia . In tiny coastal
fishing villages, monasteries and forgotten
Greek/Roman ruins of the European/ Mediterranean
region, the artist reveals the light and shadow
palettes of immerging seasons and diverse locations.
In watercolor, gouache, egg tempera and mixed media
applications, Ms. Turner creates a visual palette for
the senses and shows the viewer how the raw first
studies and impressions of places and people can
transform themselves into finished artworks of lasting
significance. This exhibit takes place from November 10th – 26th
in the Saddleback Art Gallery . An artist’s
reception will be held on Thursday, November 6th from
6-9 p.m. Gallery hours are Monday – Wednesday
from noon-4pm; Thursday evenings 4-8pm and on
Saturday, November 15th from 10 a.m. –
