The Orange County Sheriff’s Department and pet safety advocate Bark Buckle Up have team up with the California Highway Patrol, Orange County Fire Authority, Anaheim Police Department and OC Animal Care to host highlight  growing safety concerns of having unrestrained pets in the car while driving.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 98% of dogs travel unrestrained in vehicles with their owners. The loss of a family pet due to an accident can be devastating, but the risks involved are not only to the unsecured pet. Animals that are not properly secured also pose risks to the other occupants of the vehicle as well as first responders called to render aid if an accident should occur.

“Any time lost in the caring of accident victims because of the need to deal with a frightened or injured animal can and should be avoided,” said Department Spokesperson Jim Amormino.
