Coto de Caza, Ladera Ranch, 2Q2008 Crime and Vandalism Trending

July 12 2008

Since we started reporting crime and vandalism figures, the OCSD has gone through some changes in the way it collects or reports the data.  For the past year or so, the data has been retrieved largely by hand.  For this report, we understand it has been done programmatically.  While in the past it was hit and miss trying to get the data, this time the report was ready as promised.

We did note a couple of differences in this quarter's report.  For example, the total figure reported for Coto de Caza last quarter was 79.  In the recently received report, for the same quarter the figure is now 63.  Similarly for Ladera Ranch,  the previously reported 1Q2008 figure was 114.  The current report shows it now as 124.  We have asked the OCSD for clarification.  Meanwhile, we are using the latest figures.

The most significant quarter to quarter difference for Coto de Caza is that Vandalism/disorderly conduct totals increased by over 200% from a total of 6 in 1Q2008 to a total of 15 by the end of the quarter ending June 30, 2008.  Otherwise the total crime and vandalism figures decreased from a total of 63 (new figure) to 56.

On the other hand, the Ladera Ranch figures are holding its steady decline since early 2006 to a low of 119 for the quarter ending June 30, 2008.  Ladera's crime and vandalism continues to be some 50% lower per capita than its neighboring Coto de Caza.
The Ladera Ranch figures also show that fraud increased from a low of 10 cases to a high of 17!
