Tolerance, Embrace and Acceptance – a Virtual Chat with NAHJ VP of Broadcast candidate  Hugo Balta

July 18,   2008

Following are excerpts of a virtual interview with   NAHJ VP of Broadcast candidate  Hugo Balta

CZ:  What is your position on NAHJ promoting the GTL lifestyle?

Balta:     I think NAHJ needs to be inclusive of all our members (ethnicity, language, gender, sexual orientation).
Acceptance of the diversity of our association is key if we are to remain a powerful group that can impact positive change.

Our focus are journalists (students, professionals) and that is all well and good.
But we need to expand to all of our Hispanic community instead of segregating ourselves from the people, who we are a part of.

Sharing what we have in common and celebrating what makes us unique (as a group and individuals) should always be met with at the very least an open mind (if not better....open arms).

CZ:
So, you think that tolerance is synonymous with acceptance?

Balta:  Tolerance means leniency and permissive.

I think we need to be understanding and accepting.

Don't you?

CZ:  It is not a matter of semantics. It is a matter of principle:  I can be tolerant and understanding - not accepting, for example.

As we prepare to publish a series of articles on various NAHJ initiatives, we noticed that the (Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender) caucus got prominent billing during the recent NAHJ 2007 Conference held in San Jose, California  - so we are planning on interviewing as many NAHJ members and leaders, to see how receptive they may be to advocay of Judeo-Christian values within the NAHJ community.  The letter below was  recently sent to the NAHJ board of directors - any conclusions reached should be available shortly:
