Troubled Trees In Coto de Caza In Need of Therapy
Posted by: CotoBlogzz | 10/08/2008 | 11::45 AM We
have received a good number of questions and
complaints asking why the association has been planting
10
pounds of trees in a one pound bag, while other
common areas are in desperate need of bare-bones
landscape. The answers seem to be provided in part, by the CZ landscape committee in the association’s October Newsletter: “the tree planting is actually a part of a long range strategy to fill-in bare areas along the drive and prepare for the removal of older sycamore trees which have been deemed troubled trees due to the manner in which they were planted by the original developers”
While the newsletter may in part, explain the reasoning used by the association's consultants, it does not explain why most of the trees were planted in very crowed areas – not consistent with the alleged “long range strategy to fill-in bare areas”. Based on traffic safety statistics, we can see a good number of troubled residents, but have yet to see many troubled trees in Coto de Caza drive. Finally, bare areas outside of Coto de Caza drive seem to be prevalent, but we do not see the landscape committee is troubled at all by this factoid. Some residents have not
observed any troubled
sycamore trees in Coto de Caza drive, hence we assume
that the trouble is not physiological, as much as it
is psychological, and perhaps the reason the newly
planted trees are so crowed - after all, perhaps the
older trees have been shocked by the river rock or
even the Arizona look, as compared to the more
traditional bucolic look.
The CZ Board needs to get a second opinion concerning those “deceased” sycamore trees on Coto de Casa Drive . Given their track record, I would not trust the high priced consultants we have on the payroll. Those trees certainly look ok. I do think that some of the multi trunk trees that could split and/or trees leaning dramatically could cause a safety hazard and perhaps should be trimmed to one main trunk or removed. However, even so, the notion that they are going to plant a total of 50 more trees in the parkways seems pretty excessive. And given the sorry state of the face of the Woods, it would seem that there are better places to put our landscaping renovation dollars. Joe Morabito I love trees, but if those sycamores are on the decline I don't see it-could somebody please point out the problem? The trees are relatively young being mostly 10-12 years old. I have sycamores older than that. AND if some need to be removed, wouldn't it make sense to remove them prior to planting new ones? The only issue I see with some of the sycamores is that they are leaning rather than upright which might ultimately represent a safety hazard. And, unless they have been attacked by some sort of bug that is internal, those trees look healthy and just like sycamores all over. And, Jan your point is well taken. If some trees need to be removed because they are diseased, it would make sense to take them out before planting new ones from a spacing standpoint. Further, I am just not sure we need 50 more trees along Coto de Caza Drive that will require maintenance when there are so many other areas in Coto that need major landscaping renovation. I think the Board’s priorities are misdirected. Joe Morabito Hi
Joe: During the Varo/Mezger years, a strategy was put in place to upgrade Coto De Caza Drive because it is “what ever one’s sees” while driving through Coto. That strategy was continued by the current Board. The end result has been the river rocks that don’t match the existing palate and mow strips of dirt that look terrible. The Board has actually made it worse than it was before based on the advice of their high priced consultants. I have questioned this strategy not to mention actions for years because there are other areas including the face of the Woods also on Coto De Caza Drive that are a mess. It makes no sense to spend the money on the parkways when other areas need major landscaping renovation particularly since the parkways looked fine before. I would ask the question, Do the parkways along Coto De Caza Drive look better than they did before this work was done? I certainly don’t think so which is another good reason to FIRE those high priced consultants. That is why when I read that the sycamores are “diseased” I would get a second opinion, that’s for sure. Joseph Morabito
