Coto, Ladera,  2006 Crime and Vandalism Trending

February 19, 2007

After much effort, and with many thanks to SSD/OCSD's  Kristine Garcia and Teresa Roach, we finally have a comprehensive view of 2006 crime and vandalism for the un-incorporated communities of Coto de Caza and Ladera Ranch.

Not surprising, these figures are consistent with previous CotoBuzz Journal public safety reporting and puts into question the wisdom of the Coto de Caza board of director's distribution of $2,000,000.00 year allocated for public safety, including the new deployment of useless private security patrols, the poor record of  reliability of unmanned gates, the poor treatment of the California Highway Patrol personnel and the recently announced deployment of the Gendarmerie Royale Du Coto de Caza

Gendarmerie Royale Du Coto de Caza

The report clearly shows that crime and vandalism within Coto de Caza reached an all time high during the third quarter of 2006.  In contrast, the figures show a dramatic decrease of crime and vandalism in Ladera Ranch for the better part of 2006.

2006 Crime and Vandalism Pareto Analysis, By Category- Coto de Caza

The Orange County Register previously quoted a member of the Coto de Caza board of directors blaming the traffic problems (leading to the first traffic fatality in the community), to Coto Soccer Moms - nothing could be further from the truth!  Hence why we truly believe in the old adage:  "If you cannot measure it, you cannot manage it".  This is clearly illustrated by the top five crime categories in Coto de Caza for 2006:  Larceny, burglary, fraud, vandalism and disorderly conduct.  Based on this figures, it is questionable the impact  the Gendarmerie Royale Du Coto de Caza will have..  We should note that we have offered this crime prevention tool to the Varo/Mezger board of directors and to the Orange County Register.  The offer has been met only with disdain and depraved indifference by the board, and apparently has been "paraphrased out" by the Register.

The Michael Jackson Syndrome in Coto de Caza

The 40-and-above age group in Coto de Caza continues to exhibit the Michael Jackson Syndrome (GRUPS) - that is, this age group is responsible for an inordinate number of traffic citations as well as crime and vandalism.  GRUPS has been well represented in the Varo/Mezger boards.

The Ladera Ranch Top Five Crime categories are similar to the ones reported for Coto de Caza, with the exception of the "Vehicle Violations" - this may be an aberration related to the type of pro-active traffic control being used in Ladera Ranch (one we call "Pensive", in response to a Coto de Caza's idiotic characterization of Coto de Caza's traffic patrol).

2006 Crime and Vandalism Pareto Analysis, By Category- Ladera Ranch

We trust that the dramatic decline in Crime and Vandalism  for 2006 in Ladera Ranch is less serendipity and more a focused approach either by community leaders, or law enforcement agencies.
