COTO DE CAZA BOARD OF DIRECTORS, SALVATOR OR CONSERVATOR? THE RISE AND FALL OF THE VARO/MEZGER EMPIRE June

Zipperman, you just won a seat on the Coto de Caza Board of Directors, what are
you going to do now? In his book Values
in a Time of Upheaval, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger asserts that a
fundamental orientation in the modern conception of politics and life in general
are two different visions of the political task: transformation or the
preservation of its (the world’s) order.
He goes on to describe a static vision of preservation using the Chinese
understanding of the Universe: “The
Tao is both a cosmic and an ethical law. It
guarantees the harmony between heaven and earth and, thus, also harmony in
political and social life. Disorder,
the disturbance of peace, and chaos arise when people resist the Tao”. Similarly,
the Indian concept of dharma (Buddhism) declares “..the entire world is a
cycle of suffering; salvation is not to be sought in the cosmos but by departing
from it”. The
Roman Empire sought to preserve the ordered structure against all dangers from
within and without, because it embodied a sphere of peace and law, in which it
was possible for people to live in security and dignity.
Ratzinger then asserts that in the visions of the Tao and the dharma, the
idea of “history” is absent. By
taking history into account, a new vision emerges. “This vision belongs to the
oppressed, who are on the lookout for a turning point in history and cannot have
any desire for the preservation of the status quo”. hus, as opposed to the concepts of dharma and the Tao, At this point we are reminded of the warning issued by Niccolo Machiavelli "It
must be remembered that there is nothing more
difficult to plan, more doubtful of success,
more dangerous to manage, than the creation
of a new system. For the initiator
has the
enmity of all who would profit by the preservation
of the old institutions and merely lukewarm
defenders in those who would gain by the new ones.
Now,
a force field analysis (see fig 1. for summary) of the CZ Master
Association situation clearly shows what Yocham and Zipperman are up against:
Will the newcomers be conservators or will the be salvators?
Will they place personal agendas over public safety?
What about accountability (blaming mishaps on missing tickler files,
for example) and transparency (a-la-Mezger’s free trees)? Will
this be the end of the Varo/Mezger Empire?
