Coto de Caza - Public Safety Committee

Vows not to speak to the press.

August 4,  2006

The committee, made up of representatives including LAFCO, convened Wednesday to set a public meeting schedule.

As the meeting was wrapping up, LAFCO member Peter Herzog suggested all members refuse comment to the press for the duration of the negotiations. Press would be allowed to attend the three public meetings, but members were asked not to comment to reporters.

Agreeing beforehand not to speak to reporters runs contrary to the interests of public officials to have the public understand what they are trying to accomplish, said the, legal counsel for the California Newspaper Publishers Association.

Robert Stern, president of the Center for Governmental Studies, said. "It is a disservice to the public to say you're not going to comment publicly on something that is important to the public,".  However, Bob, LAFCO's assistant executive director, said LAFCO has agreed to similar restrictions in the past.!

In case you are wondering, no, this is not the Coto de Caza Safety Committee, but it could be!.  It is actually the committee trying to resolve an annexation dispute between Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. And “Bob” is not Bab Varo, but Bob Aldrich.  However, given the way the Varo/Hill/Mezger have vowed to turn Coto into a city, and  how they to treat committee members, such as the ones in the Landscape and Public Safety Committees, this story is “multi-use” – simply change names of the bureaucrats and the rest of the story applies!

Consider that although the Coto de Caza board of directors has officially announced the existence of a Public Safety Committee, the only official member is the chairman.  During the first Public Safety meeting held in July 2006, the board announced that 13 or residents had volunteered.  Earlier this week, Jerry Mezger, a member of the board of directors,  indicated that there are some 25 or so hopefuls (interesting to see the jump from 13 to 25, or this more false and misleading information coming out from the board?)  However, it is not that easy to get clearance to join the exclusive group.  It is fair to say that it is easier to get Secret Clearance from the US government, than it is to get clearance from the board to join the committee – we know because we hold Secret clearance!

First, the 25 or so hopefuls must tell their lifelong stories to board members Mezger or Zipperman.  Then the  volunteers have to convince the board that the volunteers do not have any personal opinions in the matter and by far, the most important item is that they are NOT to discuss any issue with your friends or the press!

See what we mean?
